Black and white


This Blog describes a trip taken to Guatemala and Nicaragua from December 25, 2022 to January 10, 2023.

This is the view from the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo today. Hard to believe that this is a colour photo!

When I booked my tickets I didn’t realize that the ten minute seaplane from Gabriola to Vancouver doesn’t fly on Christmas day, so instead I have four hours of travel.

My travel day started at 8 am, when Gary drove me to the Gabriola ferry terminal,  and then I took the 20 minute ferry ride to Nanaimo. I was the only foot passenger, and before we arrived one of the ferry workers whistled me his favourite Christmas song. My prearranged taxi driver was waiting for me to take me the ten minutes to the Departure Bay ferry ride. My ferry left at 10:40, and a couple hours later we are now approaching West Vancouver. Next I take a bus and then the sky train to get to the airport.

It is now 2:25 p.m. and I have an hour and a half to wait for my flight. The airport is pretty quiet and there were no line-ups to get through security. I am travelling with a carry-on and back pack which is pretty impressive for a two week holiday!

Making a new friend

Another woman from Colombia also needed a hotel, so we started searching together for one on our phones. I found one with rooms still available and called to make our two bookings. They insisted on asking for all kinds of details and setting me up with a rewards card, even though I told her we were exhausted and just needed to get there. When I called back they had no record of my call - I got a different person - and when he started in again I begged him to just send us a shuttle and take care of details when we got there. So we were finally able to get to our rooms at just before 1 a.m. My new flight only leaves at 6 pm and gets in to Vancouver at midnight, so one more night in a hotel before I can get home. My new friend Angela was only given a flight at midnight - and she is only going home to Houston, a short flight. This morning I bumped into her on my way to breakfast and so we will hang out together today. So it may be a complicated trip home, but I have made a new friend!

Heading home - day two

Travel day number two went by quickly. Angela and I had fun shopping a a new mall in Dania Beach and going out for a rushed lunch before taking the shuttle to the airport in the early afternoon. As we left from different terminals, we parted ways, after sharing contact info and promising to visit each other in the future. She offered to share yoga retreat info with her niece and others, who are yoga enthusiasts living in the Cancun area of Mexico. While I hadn’t envisioned running a bilingual yoga retreat, it could be a possibility, so I will have to study up on Spanish yoga terminology. From Spirit hell the day before, I walked into Delta heaven. There were no line-ups so I walked in effortlessly. At the bag scanning I met a guy from Tacoma, Joseph, and we ended up exchanging all kinds of stories over a beer which he invited me to. He used the last of his cash on our drinks, so I bought us both bagels for supper, the only vegetarian option I could find. Neither of us had reserved seat...

Los Angeles

While the Vancouver airport was quiet, when I arrived in Los Angeles early evening the airport was bustling. Flying in you could see endless lights of the sprawling big city. I started chatting with the guy sitting beside me, and discovered that he was also born in Durban. He and his wife had just got married and were heading for a cruise to Mexico on their honeymoon. So I gave them the freshly printed info sheet about my upcoming couples massage workshop and they were quite enthusiastic about it. I had been one of the last to board, so there was no room in the overhead bins for my bag, which I was reluctantly forced to check. So despite travelling light, I still had to wait about half an hour for my bag.  The hotel shuttle appeared minutes after I called for it, and with all the heavy stop and go traffic, and stopping at other terminals, we were slow to leave the airport.
